The quiet engine of soil is the deal between roots and fungi. Plants leak sugars from their roots to feed fungi, and in return those fungal threads stretch far through the soil, gathering water and nutrients the roots could never reach alone. Bacteria unlock minerals, worms mix and aerate, and the whole web passes food along. Healthy soil is this trade running at full speed. Poor soil is the same web, broken.
Why It Matters Above Ground
Once you see soil as alive, the rules of good growing stop being arbitrary. We avoid heavy tilling because it tears the fungal web apart. We keep the soil covered because bare ground bakes that life away. We add compost because it feeds the workforce.
