We build expensive plants to clean water. A reed bed, a wetland, and a healthy soil do the same job quietly, for free, and have done it for a very long time.
Cleaning water sounds like a job for concrete tanks and chemicals. It can be. But the most effective water treatment on the planet is a marsh. Long before we built treatment plants, wetlands, reed beds, and living soil were filtering water on a scale no factory could match. The smart move is not to replace that work. It is to copy it.
Nature cleans water better than we do. Slow it through living systems and it comes out clean, with no power bill and no chemicals.
How Nature Does It
A wetland cleans water through a few steps working together, each handling a different kind of mess.

People build this on purpose now and call it a constructed wetland or a reed bed. A small one can clean the greywater from a single house. A large one can polish the outflow of a whole town before it reaches a river. They cost little to build, almost nothing to run, and they double as habitat for birds and insects. The same idea scales from a garden to a city.
Clean Water Starts Upstream
The deepest lesson is that the cheapest water to clean is water you never dirtied. Healthy soil holds and filters rain before it ever becomes runoff. Plant cover stops the erosion that fills rivers with silt. Protecting wetlands and keeping land covered does more for water quality than any plant built at the end of the pipe. We did not invent water treatment. We are slowly relearning what the landscape already knew.
