Know the Three Kinds of Trouble

Almost everything that makes water unsafe falls into three groups, and each one calls for a different fix.

• ▸Living things, like bacteria and parasites, cause most waterborne illness.
• ▸Particles, like silt and grit, make water cloudy and shield the germs in it.
• ▸Dissolved chemicals, like arsenic or nitrates, are invisible and the hardest to remove.

A filter that kills germs does nothing about arsenic, and a method that removes chemicals may leave germs untouched. Match the tool to the threat or you have solved the wrong problem.
