The Honest Limits
Restoration is vital and it is not a substitute for stopping the harm. You can replant a reef, but if the water keeps warming it will bleach again. The work treats the symptom while the cause, mostly carbon driven heating, runs on. The people doing it know this. They are buying time, protecting key places, and keeping coral alive through a dangerous century, in the hope that the underlying problem gets solved before the reefs run out.
Why Bother Against the Odds
If the water is the real problem, why replant at all. Because reefs protect coastlines, feed communities, and hold species that exist nowhere else, and losing them entirely would be far harder to reverse than keeping a remnant alive. Restoration preserves the living material and the knowledge to use it, ready for when conditions allow recovery. It is a holding action for the ocean’s richest places, and holding the line is worth the effort while the larger fight is won.
