Most plastic was never going to be recycled. It was made cheap, mixed, and shaped for a single use. By the time it reaches a bin, the important decision was already made years earlier.

Recycling Was Never Going to Save Us
Recycling is real, but it is the last and weakest line of defense. Only a small share of plastic ever gets recycled, and most can only be reprocessed once or twice before it degrades. Leaning on recycling to fix plastic is like mopping a floor while the tap is still running.

Work Up the Ladder
There is a clear order of moves, and it runs from most to least powerful. Each rung up the ladder prevents more waste than the one below it.

Design for the Whole Life
The fix is not a single miracle material. It is products designed with their whole life in mind, built to last, to be refilled, or to break down cleanly. When the design is right, the waste problem mostly disappears on its own.
