Pull a living place apart and you get a list of species. What actually keeps it alive is the set of connections between them.

A food web is the map of who feeds whom in a place. Energy enters through plants, moves up through the animals that eat them, and cycles back down through the fungi and microbes that break everything down again.

You cannot see the web directly. You only see the plants, the birds, the insects. But the connections between them are what decide whether a place stays alive or slowly falls apart.

A living system is held together by its relationships, not by its parts. Count the species and you learn very little. Follow the connections and you learn how the whole thing works.

Energy Moves in Layers

Every living system runs on the same basic flow. Plants catch sunlight and turn it into food. Plant eaters turn that into movement and growth. Predators live off the plant eaters. And at every level, things die and feed the decomposers that return nutrients to the soil, ready to start again.

A garden with flowering plants feeds the pollinators that feed the birds that keep the pests down. The wider study of ecology is really just this at full scale, and the insects most people ignore are often the busiest workers in the whole system.
