Turn wood into a special charcoal and bury it, and you lock its carbon away for centuries while making the soil richer.
When wood rots or burns, its carbon returns to the air. But heat wood without much oxygen and something different happens. It becomes a stable charcoal called biochar that can sit in the ground for hundreds of years without breaking down.

Charge It Before You Bury It
Raw biochar is greedy at first and will pull nutrients out of the soil before it gives any back. The trick is to charge it first, by soaking it in compost, manure, or worm tea so its pores fill with life and nutrients. Add it charged, and the soil feels the benefit from the start.
